The Best Mountain Wedding Venues in Western North Carolina & North Georgia
The hunt for the perfect wedding venue can be daunting, and there are a lot of "best of" lists out there written by people who have never actually stood in these spaces on a wedding day. As a North Georgia wedding photographer who's shot weddings across Western North Carolina and the Southeast for years, I've spent a lot of time in these venues watching how the light moves, how the layout works for a wedding day timeline, and how the staff treats couples and vendors. This list is built from that experience, not a directory scrape.
These are a few favorites near our home base that we love shooting at again and again, covering a range of budgets and styles, from full destination weekends to schoolhouse rentals. They're listed in no particular order.
Hawkesdene - A Luxury Wedding Venue in the Western North Carolina Mountains
Hawkesdene tucked into 70 acres in Andrews, NC, has literally everything. It's one of the best destination wedding venues in Western North Carolina, with luxury accommodations for upwards of 100 guests, which makes it the right call if you want a full blowout weekend with your whole crew under one roof. We've photographed enough weddings here to know the space by heart, and it never photographs the same way twice depending on the season and the light.
What We Love About Hawkesdene
Hawkesdene has so much variety. It's beautifully landscaped with water features throughout the property, so there's no shortage of backdrops for portraits. A short golf cart ride to the top of the mountain reveals spectacular Appalachian views, and it's become one of our go-to spots for first looks and golden hour portraits. The events team, led by Jami, will do whatever it takes to make your vision for your wedding day come to fruition, right down to the smallest detail. Oh, and the food is always excellent, easily some of the best we've had at any venue we've worked.
Nantahala Weddings - Western North Carolina's Lakeside Wedding Venue
Nantahala Weddings in Topton, NC, is a venue that's shaped entirely by its surroundings. Set right on Nantahala Lake in the heart of Western North Carolina, it's the venue for couples who want their family and friends to actually experience Appalachian mountain life for a weekend, not just glance at it from a reception tent. It's also one of the venues we shoot at most often, including Amber and Ryan's spring wedding at Nantahala Weddings, which is a good look at how the property photographs in warmer months.
What We Love About Nantahala Weddings
If being in nature is your thing, Nantahala is a great place for you. The venue offers two different ceremony options on site. Choose the Chapel in the Sky, which sits at 3,500 feet overlooking the lake, or the covered garden chapel surrounded by native fern and lovely blooms. The whole property sits under a thick tree canopy and is landscaped with natural rock, moss, and greenery, so it photographs beautifully whether the sky is clear or overcast.
For couples who want to take advantage of the surrounding Nantahala National Forest, Wayah Bald Lookout Tower (built in 1937) is a short drive up the mountain on well-maintained roads. This historic fire tower is one of our favorite spots for first looks and portrait sessions. The trails up there are magical and the views are stunning. It's also a short drive to some beautiful waterfalls, the Appalachian Trail, and the Bartram Trail. On-site facilities can host your getting-ready, rehearsal dinner, and there are private cabins for your wedding party to stay in. Fresh mountain air, an inviting lake, and adventure at every turn. It's hard to beat.
Hiwassee River Retreat - A North Georgia Wedding Venue on the Water
Hiwassee River Retreat is another great option if you want a whole wedding weekend with your friends and family. As a North Georgia wedding photographer, this one sits close to home for us, and while it's technically not North Carolina, it's close enough to the mountains to feel like it. The venue can host up to 200 guests, has cabins throughout the property for your wedding party and out-of-town guests, and is convenient to shopping and local restaurants in Hiawassee. We photographed James and Brandi's wedding at The Retreat here, which is a great example of how much this property has to offer for a full weekend celebration.
What We Love About Hiwassee River Retreat
Hiwassee River Retreat runs right through the property, which opens up a lot of opportunities for photography you won't find at a landlocked venue. You can walk right out of your cabin and fish for trout before the ceremony if that's your kind of morning. There are great indoor and outdoor options for ceremony spots, so you're not locked into one look regardless of weather, and the raw-space setup means you have a lot of freedom to make the day your own.
Choestoe School House - Budget-Friendly Wedding Venue in North Georgia
Choestoe School House in Blairsville, GA is both adorable and as budget-friendly as it gets. If you're a DIY couple planning a wedding on a tight budget, this place is perfect. The venue is a restored one-room schoolhouse that's been renovated for public use, and it's proof that a great North Georgia wedding venue doesn't have to come with a five-figure rental fee.
What We Love About Choestoe School House
Talk about easy on the wallet. The rental fee used to be $75, though we're sure that's gone up since we first wrote this, so give them a call for current pricing. Either way, it's a steal. It's nestled in the foothills and farms of the North Georgia mountains, close to downtown Blairsville, and the surrounding fields are gorgeous for portraits. Even couples with a bigger budget should still consider it for the charm alone. It leaves more room in the budget for the things that actually last past the wedding day, like photography. You really do have to see it in person to get it.
