One of the first questions I hear from couples is simple: When should we get married?

Blue Ridge, Georgia is beautiful almost year round - but if you're only looking at Blue Ridge, you may be missing the mountains that will actually take your breath away. The Nantahala region of Western North Carolina - Wayah Bald, the Nantahala Forest, the balds and fire towers and ancient ridge-lines of the southern Appalachians - is where some of my most stunning elopement work has happened. It's less known, less developed, and honestly more wild. People just don't know to look for it yet.

Both regions are extraordinary. Each season brings something genuinely different. And the right answer depends entirely on what you want your day to feel like. Here's an honest, season-by-season look so you can pick the date that actually fits your vision - not just the one everyone else picks.

Spring in Blue Ridge, GA and the Nantahala Mountains (March - May)

If you've spent any time in a city, you know what spring feels like there - concrete warming up, allergies, everyone suddenly outside on the same sidewalk.

Spring in the Blue Ridge and Nantahala mountains is something else entirely.

Wildflowers appear on the trail edges before you even realize winter is over. Waterfalls run full and loud from snowmelt. The light through the newly budding trees has a softness that feels almost unreal after a long gray season. The air smells like soil and moving water and something you don't have a word for until you've stood in it.

It's a gorgeous time for a ceremony - but plan for the elevation. I've shot elopements on top of Wayah Bald fire tower in April when it was in the mid-forties at the summit. That's not unusual. As a general rule you can count on it being about ten degrees cooler at ceremony elevation than whatever your weather app shows for the town below. That gap matters when you're standing on an open bald in a wedding dress.

Spring showers are common too, so if you're picturing an outdoor elopement at a higher elevation location, have a backup plan in mind. By late April and into May, temperatures even out and this becomes one of the most comfortable and quietly beautiful windows to get married outdoors in the southern Appalachians.

Summer in Blue Ridge, GA and the Nantahala Mountains (June - August)

Summer gives you the most daylight to work with - which means more time for portraits, a later sunset, and a golden hour that stretches long and warm over the ridgelines. Ceremonies can start later in the evening without losing light, which opens up your timeline in a way winter dates simply can't.

For couples coming from Atlanta or other southern cities, the temperature difference alone is worth the drive. What feels oppressive in the city feels manageable at elevation - and in the Nantahala mountains of Western NC, where the forest is dense and the elevation runs high, summer days feel genuinely cool compared to what you left behind.

The Nantahala region in summer is lush in a way that photographs like another world entirely. Deep green. Layered. Ancient. If you've only seen these mountains in fall foliage photos, summer will surprise you.

Humidity exists in the valleys in July and August - but at elevation in the Nantahala it's noticeably more comfortable. Factor that into your attire planning either way, and then forget about it. The photos in that long summer light are worth every bit of it.

Fall in the Nantahala Mountains and Blue Ridge, GA (September - November)

This is the one everyone asks about - and for good reason.

Fall foliage in the Nantahala mountains and North Georgia is the kind of backdrop you simply cannot recreate anywhere else. As a Blue Ridge GA elopement photographer who works extensively throughout the Nantahala region, fall is genuinely my favorite time to be behind the camera up here. The color moves through the mountains over several weeks, generally peaking from mid-October into early November depending on elevation and the weather that year.

Here's what most people don't realize: the Nantahala mountains hit peak color earlier and more dramatically than the valleys around Blue Ridge, GA - because of the elevation. Wayah Bald, the fire tower overlooks, the high balds of Western NC are absolutely electric in mid-October. If fall foliage is the whole point of your elopement date, the Nantahala region should be at the top of your list.

The light in October has a quality that stops me mid-sentence. Warm. Golden. The kind that makes every frame look like it was lit on purpose.

Fall is the most requested season across this whole region. If a fall date matters to you, reach out early - good dates and good vendors go fast, sometimes a year or more out. Winter in the Blue Ridge and Nantahala Mountains (December - February)

Winter weddings are underrated, and I will keep saying that until more couples believe me.

For anyone coming from a city, the quiet up here in winter is the kind of thing that stops you in your tracks the first time you feel it. Not the absence of noise exactly - more like the presence of something that noise usually covers up. The mountains in January have a stillness that feels earned.

The views open up dramatically once the leaves drop. You can see ridgeline after ridgeline stretching into the distance in a way that summer simply hides. The bare trees against a winter sky photograph beautifully - stark, honest, and quietly dramatic in a way that colored foliage sometimes overshadows. Some of my most striking elopement images have come from January mornings when the frost was still on the ground and the mountains were completely ours.

Remember that ten degree elevation rule in winter too - a ceremony at Wayah Bald or a high Nantahala overlook is a real commitment to the elements, and I mean that in the best possible way. There is nothing like standing on top of the world in January with the person you love and absolutely no one else around for miles.

Off-season pricing is often more flexible in winter, both for photography and for cabin rentals across the Blue Ridge and Nantahala region - which is worth considering if budget is part of your planning. And if snow is part of your dream day, winter is your season - though it's never guaranteed this far south. What you can count on is softer light, quieter trails, and a stillness that feels like the mountains saved it just for you.

So What's Actually the Best Time?

Honestly, there isn't one universal answer.

It comes down to the feeling you want, the guest list you're working with, how much you care about foliage versus flexibility, and how far in advance you're planning.

Couples who want that iconic fall color - especially at elevation in the Nantahala mountains - need to book early. Couples who want quiet, intimate, and budget-friendly often find winter or early spring gives them exactly that. And if you just want long days and easy scheduling, summer in the Nantahala is genuinely hard to beat.

Think About Your Guest List Too

Season affects more than just the view. Fall and summer weekends are peak travel times, and hotels and cabins book up faster and at higher rates - particularly in Blue Ridge, GA which has become a beloved destination. If most of your people are local, that matters less. But if you're asking folks to fly in or drive several hours, a shoulder season like late spring or early winter can make travel and lodging noticeably easier on everyone - without sacrificing much in terms of scenery.

The Nantahala region of Western NC also tends to have more availability and more reasonable pricing on cabin rentals than Blue Ridge, GA during peak season - another reason it's worth considering if flexibility matters to you.

A Quick Note on Weekday and Off-Peak Dates

If your date is flexible, a weekday or off-peak Sunday wedding can open up more availability - especially during the busy fall stretch. It's not for everyone, but for couples who care more about getting their first-choice photographer and location than about a Saturday date, it's genuinely worth considering. Some of the most relaxed and unhurried elopement days I've ever photographed happened on a Tuesday.
